Great Hornbills are primarily frugivorous, feeding heavily on figs and other forest fruits, making them crucial seed dispersers for maintaining forest biodiversity. How to identify
The Great Hornbill is a very large bird, measuring 95-120 cm in length with a wingspan up to 180 cm. Adults display striking black plumage on the back, wings, and a broad black band across the tail, contrasting sharply with white neck, lower abdomen, and tail with a white terminal band. The most distinctive feature is the massive curved yellow bill topped by a large, bright yellow and black casque. Males have red eyes with black skin around them, while females have white eyes with red skin. In flight, the bird shows a distinctive pattern with white wing bars. The call is a loud, resonant 'kok-kok-kok' sound, often delivered in repeated sequences, along with roaring and cackling notes. Juveniles lack the prominent casque and have smaller bills.
Habitat
Great Hornbills inhabit tropical and subtropical evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests, and mixed forests with tall, mature trees. They prefer primary forests and well-developed secondary forests in hilly and mountainous terrain, typically at elevations from lowlands up to 2,000 meters. The species requires forests with an abundance of fruiting trees, particularly figs, and large emergent trees with natural cavities suitable for nesting.
Distribution
The Great Hornbill ranges across South and Southeast Asia, from the Western Ghats and foothills of the Himalayas in India, through Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, southern China (Yunnan), Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra. The distribution is increasingly fragmented due to deforestation, with populations becoming isolated in protected areas and remaining forest patches.
Diet
Primarily frugivorous, with figs (Ficus species) comprising the majority of their diet, supplemented by other fruits including Myristica, Knema, and various drupes and berries. They also consume animal prey including large insects, small mammals, birds, reptiles (particularly lizards and snakes), and occasionally nestlings. Great Hornbills play a critical role as long-distance seed dispersers, regurgitating or defecating large seeds that help regenerate forests.
Behavior
Great Hornbills are diurnal and highly social, often found in pairs or family groups, though they may congregate in flocks of 10-40 individuals at abundant fruiting trees. They are strong fliers capable of traveling long distances to find food sources. Their flight produces a distinctive loud whooshing sound due to the lack of typical feather vanes on their flight feathers. They are relatively sedentary but may undertake local movements in response to fruit availability. Morning and evening hours are spent calling from prominent perches. They engage in aerial chases and courtship displays involving bill-to-bill food transfers.
Reproduction & life cycle
Great Hornbills are monogamous and breed once annually, typically between January and April, varying by region. The most remarkable aspect of their reproduction is the female's self-imposed imprisonment: she enters a tree cavity and seals the entrance with mud, droppings, and food remains, leaving only a narrow slit through which the male feeds her. She remains sealed for 3-5 months, molting all flight feathers while incubating 1-3 eggs (usually 2). The male makes hundreds of feeding trips to provision the female and later the chicks. Incubation lasts about 38-40 days. Once chicks are partially grown, the female breaks out, re-seals the cavity, and both parents feed the young until they fledge at about 80 days old. Young birds may remain with parents for several months after fledging.
When to look
Breeding season from January to April in most of range; best observed during fruiting seasons (March-June and September-December in many areas) when birds congregate at fruiting trees. Year-round resident throughout range with local movements following fruit availability.
Cultural significance
The Great Hornbill holds profound cultural significance among indigenous tribes of Northeast India, particularly the Nyishi people of Arunachal Pradesh, who traditionally used the casque and feathers in ceremonial headgear, though many communities now use artificial substitutes in conservation-conscious practices. The bird features in folklore and traditional stories across its range, often symbolizing nobility and fidelity. In some Southeast Asian cultures, hornbill motifs appear in traditional art and architecture. The species serves as the state bird of Kerala and Arunachal Pradesh in India.
